What Is 6K Gold?

For many people, buying gold jewellery has become more complicated than it should be.

Some have bought pieces that looked like gold, only to see the finish change with wear. Others have explored solid gold jewellery and found that the price of traditional karats placed the pieces they liked outside their budget.

Then there is 6K gold…a term that is still relatively unfamiliar in Australia.

So, what exactly is it?

What Is 6K Gold?

6K gold is a solid gold alloy containing 25% pure gold.

The karat system measures gold purity out of 24 parts. In 6K gold, six of those 24 parts are pure gold, with the remaining 18 parts made from alloying metals that give the material its strength, colour and wear characteristics.

Quarter Carat's 6K alloy is made using gold, silver, copper and zinc.

Importantly, the alloy is solid throughout the piece. The gold is not applied as a surface coating, and there is no separate base-metal core underneath.

At Quarter Carat, every production batch is checked using XRF testing to confirm its metal composition before it is made into jewellery.

Solid Throughout

One of the most useful things to understand about 6K gold is the way it is constructed.

With a solid alloy, the same material continues throughout the piece through the band of a ring, the links of a chain, the clasp of a bracelet or the post of an earring.

That is different from jewellery where gold is applied to the surface of another material.

Gold-plated jewellery, for example, has a thin layer of gold over a base metal. Gold vermeil uses a gold coating over sterling silver, while gold-filled jewellery uses a thicker bonded layer of gold over another metal.

6K gold does not rely on a surface layer. Its gold content is part of the alloy itself.

Why 6K Gold Exists

The idea behind 6K gold is relatively simple: to create solid gold pieces that feel considered, are long lasting and are at a more accessible price.

Gold content has a significant influence on the material cost of a piece of jewellery.

6K contains 25% pure gold.
9K contains 37.5%.
18K contains 75%.

As the proportion of pure gold increases, so does the underlying material cost.

By working with 6K, we are able to create solid gold pieces at price points that would be difficult to achieve using higher-karat alloys.

For us, that means designing jewellery intended to be worn often, while keeping solid gold within reach for more people.

Why 6K Gold Is Less Familiar in Australia

6K gold is not yet widely used in the Australian jewellery market.

For generations, Australian consumers have been most familiar with 9K, 14K and 18K gold, so those karats naturally dominate jewellery stores and product descriptions.

That does not change what 6K represents chemically: an alloy containing 25% pure gold throughout the material.

Because 6K is less familiar, we believe transparency is especially important. Every Quarter Carat piece clearly identifies the material it is made from, and our production batches are tested for composition before manufacturing.

Our aim is not to make 6K sound like something it is not. It is simply a different gold alloy, created for a different price point and way of wearing jewellery.

What Is 6K Gold Like to Wear?

6K gold has been developed with everyday wear in mind.

Our alloy produces a soft, warm champagne-gold colour (very similar to 9K) and is designed to retain its appearance through regular use.

Like all jewellery, 6K gold can develop fine scratches and changes in surface finish with regular wear. This is normal and can generally be refreshed through professional cleaning and polishing.

Quarter Carat's alloy is also made without nickel or cadmium, two metals commonly associated with jewellery sensitivities.

Made for Everyday Life

One of the reasons we developed 6K gold was that we wanted jewellery to feel less precious in the way it had to be treated.

Pieces should be able to become part of everyday life.

They will naturally collect the small marks that come with being worn, handled and enjoyed. That is different from a surface finish wearing away; the material underneath remains the same alloy.

For us, that is one of the most important qualities of 6K gold: it is made to be worn.

About Quarter Carat

Quarter Carat is an Australian jewellery label specialising in 6K solid gold alloy jewellery.

Our pieces are made using an alloy containing 25% pure gold, together with silver, copper and zinc. Production batches are XRF-tested for composition, and our jewellery is made without nickel or cadmium.

We created Quarter Carat around a simple idea: solid gold jewellery should be something more people can own, wear and enjoy every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6K gold real gold?

6K gold contains real gold.

It is a solid alloy made with 25% pure gold, with the remaining 75% made from other metals that provide strength, colour and durability.

The gold is present throughout the material rather than being applied only to the surface.

Is 6K gold plated?

No.

6K gold is a solid alloy. There is no separate base metal underneath and no gold coating applied to the surface.

The colour and gold content come from the material itself.

What does 6K mean?

The karat system measures gold purity out of 24 parts.

6K therefore means that six of the 24 parts are pure gold, equivalent to 25% gold content.

For reference:

6K = 25% pure gold
9K = 37.5% pure gold
14K = 58.5% pure gold
18K = 75% pure gold

Does 6K gold tarnish?

6K gold does not behave like gold-plated jewellery because there is no surface layer of gold to wear away.

As with other gold alloys, its appearance can be affected over time by wear, cosmetics, chemicals, perspiration and the environment. It may occasionally benefit from cleaning or polishing to restore its original finish.

Will 6K gold turn my skin green?

Quarter Carat's 6K alloy is made from gold, silver, copper and zinc and contains no nickel or cadmium.

Skin chemistry differs from person to person, so we avoid making absolute claims about reactions to any jewellery alloy. In normal wear, however, there is no separate base-metal layer beneath the surface that can be exposed as plating wears away.

Is 6K gold hypoallergenic?

Yes. Quarter Carat's 6K alloy is made without nickel or cadmium, which are metals commonly associated with jewellery sensitivities.

If you have a known metal allergy, we recommend checking the alloy composition before purchasing.

How is 6K gold different from 9K gold?

The principal difference is gold content.

6K contains 25% pure gold, while 9K contains 37.5%.

Both are alloys in which gold is combined with other metals to produce the colour, strength and working properties required for jewellery.

The lower gold content of 6K also reduces its material cost, which allows jewellery to be produced at a more accessible price point.

What colour is 6K gold?

Quarter Carat's 6K alloy has a soft, warm champagne-gold tone.

Its colour comes from the combination of gold and the other metals within the alloy itself, rather than from plating or a surface coating.

Can 6K gold be worn every day?

Yes. Quarter Carat's 6K alloy has been developed specifically with everyday jewellery in mind.

As with all fine jewellery, some care will help preserve its finish. Avoid harsh chemicals where possible, clean pieces periodically and have heavily worn jewellery professionally inspected or polished when needed.
